Werner von Siemens Excellence Award 2012

Werner von Siemens Excellence Award 2012 for the best doctoral thesis was attributed to two researchers of the Joint Laboratory of Optics – Karel Lemr (author of the thesis) and Jan Soubusta (his supervisor). The awarded work entitled Experimental quantum information processing with photon pairs summarizes the research performed by the quantum information group over the past four years. The common denominator of all the experiments described in the thesis is the use of photon pairs for quantum information processing tasks. In contrast to classical information processing known from contemporary electronics, quantum information processing promises significant gain in computing efficiency. The specific examples of experiments presented in the awarded thesis are for instance a quantum gate that should constitute a crucial building block of future quantum computers or a quantum cloning device used to test security of quantum cryptography. Such discoveries in this field of basic research are inevitable steps towards applied quantum information processing in practical devices like quantum computers or quantum cryptography tools.

Werner von Siemens excellence award is attributed each year to researchers in various categories including basic and applied research or pedagogical contribution. More details can be found on the Siemens Czech Republic web page (http://www.siemens.cz/cenasiemens).
