Abstract = Joint photon-number and integrated-intensity probability distributions
are used for description of time evolution of optical parametric process
including processes of frequency conversion, parametric amplification
and subharmonic generation taking into account losses and noise. Using
these tools quantum entanglement of modes based on the separability
criteria is considered and nonclassical properties of the process under
discussion are demonstrated by means of conditional probability
distributions and their Fano factors, difference-number probability
distributions, quantum oscillations, squeezing of vacuum fluctuations
and negative values of the joint wave probability quasidistributions in
time evolution. Sub-Poissonian and sub-shot-noise properties are
illustrated for spontaneous process and stimulated process by means of
chaotic light and squeezed light. Also the multimode processes are
investigated in the spirit of the Mandel-Rice photocount formula. The
description is applied to interpretation of experimental data. (C) 2011

Abstract = The light initially prepared in a coherent state runs the stimulated and
spontaneous Raman processes in a second-order nonlinear medium. Using
analytical expressions of field operators for the light modes, we
determine the quantum statistical properties of the modes in the
stimulated and spontaneous Raman processes. By a choice of phase, we
obtain a boson-pair property correlating the pump and vibration modes
and such a property correlating the pump and anti-Stokes modes. The
Stokes and vibration modes exhibit the boson-pair property for all
initial phase differences between the pump mode and the other ones. In
the spontaneous Raman process only the Stokes and vibration modes show
       such a property.,

Abstract = We provide two quantum descriptions of a beam splitter with second-order
nonlinearity. Models of nonlinear couplers could be the same. For
simplicity, a symmetry of the device is assumed, which does not exclude
various reflectivities. The models differ in taking into account the
co-propagation of beams and replacing it by their counter-propagation.
The unitary operators that evolve the input states into the output ones
are calculated by using a momentum operator and the effective distance
of presumed co-propagation and counter-propagation, respectively.,

Abstract = A simple trilinear Hamiltonian is utilized for a description of the
Raman effect. The method of invariant subspaces, which is suitable for
numerical calculations in the Schrodinger picture, is analyzed. As an
example of the numerical calculation, the time dependence of an
entanglement measure, the so-called negativity, is found for the initial
few-photon states. Most of the analysis is devoted to the Heisenberg
picture, in which the perturbation expansions are known.,

Abstract = We investigate two atoms coupled with a quantized field mode. Whereas
one is the Jaynes-Cummings (JC) two-level atom, the other is an
autoionizing system with two discrete levels and a continuum of states.
In case interactions between the atoms do not occur, the periodic
behavior of the JC atom contrasts with the autoionizing system. We ask
whether or not a seesaw-like interaction between the atoms can change
the behavior of the JC atom. We present photoelectron spectra dependent
on the time for various initial states of the field mode.,

Abstract = We show that radiation generated in optical parametric down-conversion
with losses and noise is entangled for all times if the coupling
coefficient is higher than half of damping constant and the product of
damping constant and mean number of noise photons. For the process
stimulated by means of chaotic light there is a saturable bound of its
intensity for the generation of nonclassical light. Otherwise the
quantum behaviour and entanglement are fully reduced. Under some
restrictions for noise nonclassical light can also be generated at and

Abstract = A full quantum treatment of the problem of quantum non-demolition
measurements in non-linear optical media is considered. The system
consists of four different coupling parameters in addition to different
phase parameters. The solution of the Heisenberg equations of motion for
the dynamical operators is obtained. The phenomenon of squeezing is
examined for both normal and principal squeezing and it has been shown
that it is more pronounced for the compound mode case. The intensity
correlation function is also calculated and discussed where the
observation of the antibunching can be reported. In addition to the
higher-order moments we examined the quantum correlation functions,
joint quasidistribution functions, as well as photon-number distribution
and its factorial moments. It has shown that the non-classical
properties is apparent of this system and more pronounced for the
compound mode (1,3). (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.,

Abstract = Two strongly-pumped parametric interactions are simultaneously realized
in a single nonlinear crystal in order to generate three strongly
correlated optical fields. By combining together the outputs of two of
the three detectors measuring intensities of the generated fields, we
obtain the joint photocount statistics between the single field and the
sum of the other two. We apply a microscopic quantum theory developed
earlier to determine the joint photon-number distribution and the joint
quasi-distributions of integrated intensities and prove nonclassical
nature of the three-mode state. Finally, by performing a conditional
measurement on the single field, we obtain a state endowed with a
sub-Poissonian statistics, as testified by the analysis of the
conditional Fano factor. The role of quantum detection efficiencies in
this conditional state-preparation method is discussed in detail.,

Abstract = Twin-beam states of light produced by spontaneous parametric
downconversion are endowed with sub-shot-noise photon-number
correlations at any intensity regime. We have demonstrated
       sub-shot-noise photon-number correlations in a ps-pulsed intense (more
than 1000 photons) twin beam by measuring the variance of the difference
in the number of photons detected in the two outputs of the crystal. The
variance is 3.25 dB below the shot-noise level. Measurements show that
detection of sub-shot-noise correlation requires a careful selection of
twin coherence areas and that these areas depend on the pump intensity.,

Abstract = Joint signal-idler photoelectron distributions of twin beams containing
several tens of photons per mode have been measured recently. Exploiting
a microscopic quantum theory for joint quasidistributions in parametric
down-conversion developed earlier we characterize properties of twin
beams in terms of quasidistributions using experimental data. Negative
values as well as oscillating behavior in the quantum region are
characteristic for the subsequently determined joint signal-idler
quasidistributions of integrated intensities. Also the conditional and

Abstract = We investigate the quantum statistics of three time-dependent coupled
oscillators in the presence of multiphoton processes. The system is
connected with the two-atom multiphoton Tavis-Cummings model. The
solution of the Heisenberg equations of the motion is obtained in a
compact form. We assume that the modes are initially prepared in
coherent states, and we discuss nonclassical phenomena (squeezing and
sub-Poissonian behavior). Further, we examine the joint
quasi-distribution functions as well as photon-number distribution and
its factorial moments. The system has shown that the nonclassical effect
is apparent in compound modes (1, 3) and (2,3). Moreover, the
superstructure phenomenon is observed when the photon transition is
increased. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.,

Abstract = We investigate counterpropagation of the two-mode input state in a
corrugated waveguide, which reproduces a photonic band-gap structure.
First assuming a gain medium, we model a distributed feedback laser as
an amplifier. From this case we pass to the attenuator, which
corresponds to a lossy medium. We determine the transmission and
fidelity spectra for the waveguide in the dependence on a mismatch
coefficient and a measure of losses.,

Abstract = We compare the original formalism in which the travelling-wave setup of
the experiment due to Zou et al (1991 Phys. Rev. Lett. 67 318) was
analysed with a simple quantum optical approach that was later used for
the same purpose. The analyses, both original and subsequent, included
the quantum correlation between the signal beams. Whereas the original
work spoke of a single photon per beam, the subsequent papers
generalized to many photons per mode. We try to show that, in the
original theory as well, one may speak of many photons per beam, without
changing the relationship with the experiment. We conclude that the
original analysis represents multiphoton stationary fields by interval
       restrictions comprising single photons.,

Abstract = The fluorescence detector, a component of the AUGER project, is designed
to observe fluorescent light generated in interactions of high energy
cosmic rays with nitrogen atoms in the Earth's atmosphere. This article
presents several designs of optical filters transmitting in the range
300 nn - 420 nm, where the fluorescent light is emitted. Two approaches
are proposed - a system of thin dielectric layers and a combination of
suitable glass plates. Quality of different filters is determined
according to the value of transmittance in the required wavelength
range, the shape of the transmittance curve at the edge of the
transmitting window, long-term stability as well as feasibility and cost
of their mass production. Selected types of filters were prepared, their
parameters measured and compared with predicted values.,

Abstract = We study the arrangement of two down-conversion crystals with aligned
and partially aligned idler beams in the quasimonochromatic
approximation. Treating the signal fields as correlated chaotic modes,
we arrive at a detailed description and illustration of their
mathematically well defined state in terms of number and phase
properties. We show it to be a mixed partial phase-difference state. We
derive the closed formulae for the phase-difference distributions in
this state derived from the phase-space distributions related to the
normal, symmetrical and antinormal orderings of field operators and show
that such distributions depend exclusively on measures of correlation
which are variants of the modulus of the familiar degree of coherence.
Quantum correlation influences fluctuations of photon-number sum,
photon-number difference and quantum phase difference. Starting from a
quasidistribution which carries the same information as the statistical
operator, we arrive at the joint distributions of number sum and phase
difference and the quasidistribution of number difference and phase
       difference.,

Abstract = The theory of continuous measurement has been applied to photon counting
by means of an atomic beam crossing a cavity and impinging on a
field-ionization detector behind. An interesting feature of the proposed
measurement consists in an incoherent frequency down-conversion coupling
of the measured mode to another mode, which, on the assumption that the
latter is initially in the vacuum state, results in a second
       registration of the counts.,

Abstract = We use the concept of phase space and Husimi quasidistribution to derive
joint-phase probability distribution and quantum-phase properties for
the Kerr couplers. The exact numerical as well as approximate analytical
solutions of the Schrodinger equation are found. The spatial development
of the single-mode phase distributions and phase-difference distribution
is demonstrated. The Fourier coefficients of the phase distributions are
introduced and employed to describe quantum-phase behaviour, It is shown
that the phase-difference evolution is closely connected to an energy
exchange between two waveguides, which form the coupler. The collapses
and revivals of the mean photon number oscillations are due to the
bifurcation of the phase-difference probability distribution, which has
a two-fold symmetry in the interval of collapse. (C) 1999 Elsevier

the Susskind-Glogower exponential phase operators motivates the
introduction and study of quasidistributions of the cosine and sine of

Abstract = Using the statistical characteristics of the photon number, quantum
phase and field quadratures, based on the preferred phase, we have
demonstrated a Kerr-like behaviour for the cascaded second-order
nonlinearities and have studied thoroughly the oscillations superimposed
on the Kerr-like trend for an input coherent state. We have performed a
global study over the entire quantum period in an idealized model of the
trend of this process based on the lossless Kerr progression.,

Abstract = Quasiprobability distributions of the photon number and the
momentum-like quadrature appropriate to partial symmetrizations of
products of the photon-number and quadrature operators allowing these
operators to alternate at most (2r - 2) times are good approximations to
the Wigner function for these simultaneously considered noncommuting
quantities related to the fully symmetric ordering. It is shown that the
r-parametrized quasiprobability distributions must take on values at
multiples of 1/r. A scheme for simultaneous measurement of the photon
number and the momentum-like quadrature is proposed. The r-parametrized
quasidistributions can be compared with a joint distribution of the
photon number and the momentum-like quadrature measured simultaneously.,

Abstract = A continuous photon-number measurement has been assumed in the idler
mode output from parametric down-conversion for an initial coherent
state. The states generated in the signal mode due to the mode
entanglement and the effects of both the destructive and the ideal
reduction are described in terms of a quasidistribution of the complex
field amplitude as well as of the density-matrix elements. The resulting
near-number states in the ideal case are suitable for the study of the
dynamics of phase and quadrature distributions rotated by the actual
preferred phase. These states exhibit both number and quadrature

Abstract = Photocount distributions have been calculated and experimentally
determined for light transmitted through a dispersion of particles of
varying density. From these the coherent and incoherent components of
the transmitted light intensity could be determined. The coherent
intensity was shown to obey the Lambert-Beer law. Autocorrelation
functions of light scattered in the presence of multiple light
scattering were measured and inverted by using an inverse Laplace
transform technique. The single-scattering and multiple-scattering
contributions can be distinguished in the corresponding spectra of decay
times. The amount of multiple light scattering increases with increasing
concentration of scatterers and reaches the limit of strong multiple
light scattering when the transport of light through the dispersion
       becomes diffusive.,

Abstract = Using the approximation of small fluctuations around a stationary point,
photon statistics and squeezing of vacuum fluctuations are derived in
stimulated Raman scattering including the coupling of photon-photon and
photon-phonon modes. The depletion of pump light is described and it is
shown that a regime of inversion of the process is related to an
increase in quantum fluctuations, which are finally reduced again, more
in the anti-Stokes mode than in the Stokes mode. If the anti-Stokes
coupling is stronger than the Stokes coupling, then an oscillating
behaviour of the statistical characteristics occurs and substantial
squeezing can be found in photon-phonon modes.,

Abstract = Quantum statistical properties are derived for stimulated Raman
scattering by squeezed phonons including squeezing of vacuum
fluctuations in radiation modes and sub-Poisson photon behaviour.
Initial radiation can be in squeezed thermalized and/or sub-Poisson
states, phonon system can also be squeezed. In particular, effects of
initial phase conditions, losses, initial nonclassical behaviour and
phonon squeezing are demonstrated in terms of reduced factorial moments
up to the fifth order in combined photon-photon and photon-phonon modes.
Also photon number distribution, quadrature variances and principal
       squeeze parameters are shown.,
