CTA concept

New ambitious European project in astroparticle physics – CTA – will build a new international observatory focused on detection of high-energy photons (belongs to ESFRI roadmap). The project aims at discovery of a large  number of yet unknown cosmisc sources of high-energy gamma radiation and determination of their characteristics. During May 4-8, 2015, regular meeting of scientists taking part in the preparations of future CTA observatory took place in Turku, Finland. At this meeting, the Faculty of Science of Palacky University has been oficially accepted as a member of the consortium. Scientists of RCPTM – Joint Laboratory of Optics have contributed to the preparation and realization of the project already for some time mainly in the field of long-time observation of cloud coverage and nightsky background at candidate sites of the observatory (Namibia, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, U.S.A., Canary Islands), in the design and testing of mirror samples and coatings of the telescopes, physical modelling etc. Previous results of the Olomouc group created good recommendation for the acceptance of the Faculty of Science of Palacky University to this prestigious consortium. Besides RCPTM, two other Czech workplaces are included in the collaboration – Institute of Physics AS CR and Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the Charles University, Prague.
